Golf is one of the most popular sports in Texas and that includes Dallas. The Dallas Cowboys are also the favorite team all throughout the DFW Metroplex. When you blend these Lone Star State passions together, you get the incredible Cowboys Golf Club – an absolute must-play golf course in Dallas!
Now, as someone who calls Dallas home and enjoys hitting the links, I’ve had the pleasure of playing some fantastic public golf courses around town. Trust me, I’ve found some real gems that I can’t recommend enough. You can check out my top picks right here.
But hey, let’s be honest. Sometimes, you just crave that exclusive, country club vibe, right? It’s like finding your own slice of golfing paradise.
Now, unless you’ve got connections, getting access to a private golf course, in Dallas, can feel like a bit of a long shot. Sure, there are a few places that come close in terms of amenities and course conditions, but none can hold a candle to the unmatched experience you’ll find at the Cowboys Golf Club. Trust me, it’s in a league of its own!
Overview of the club:
On June 14, 2001, a significant moment unfolded in golf history: the official opening of Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas.
This groundbreaking establishment stands as the world’s first NFL-themed golf course, paying homage to the storied Dallas Cowboys, winners of five Super Bowl championships.
For those seeking to embrace the essence of the Lone Star State, Cowboys Golf Club offers an unparalleled experience. Each swing on this meticulously designed course evokes a sense of journey through Texas history.
Crafted by Jeff Brauer, the course’s design mirrors the rugged charm of a genuine Texas ranch, blending challenge with allure.
What truly distinguishes Cowboys Golf Club is its meticulous attention to detail. From the prominent placement of the Cowboys logo on tee markers to the rustic Western-inspired clubhouse, every element is carefully curated to immerse patrons in the quintessential Texas cowboy lifestyle.
It’s an experience that captures the heart and soul of Texas, one swing at a time.
Booking a tee time:
Like any other public golf course in Dallas, you have the option to book a tee time directly through their website or via various tee time services.
Now, I’ll be upfront with you: Cowboys Golf Club does have higher green fees compared to other courses in Dallas. However, I assure you, the cost is justified given all the amenities included.
On weekdays and weekends, expect green fees to range from $250 to $265. Prices tend to drop to around $200 by 2:00 PM, further reducing to about $150 around 4:00 PM, and even down to $70 after 5:00 PM.
During spring, when daylight extends until 8:30 PM, snagging an evening tee time at these rates is a real steal!
Because of its popularity and hosting of numerous tournaments during the summer, weekend tee times can be hard to come by. Therefore, fall and spring are optimal seasons to enjoy a round at Cowboys Golf Club without hassle.
Pulling up to the course:
Cowboys Golf Club sits in Grapevine, Texas, approximately 30 minutes away from downtown Dallas. Thankfully, major highways link all Dallas suburbs, making the journey to the course quite straightforward.
As you navigate to Fairway Dr, it’s easy to miss the entrance if you’re not paying attention. The course is somewhat concealed behind the lush trees of Grapevine (trust me, I’ve driven past it myself!).
Once you arrive at the parking lot, you’ll spot several spaces reserved for Cowboys players – a neat touch, in my opinion.
Depending on the timing of your visit, you might even catch some players honing their skills out on the course!
The clubhouse boasts a design reminiscent of a Texas hill country ranch, exuding beauty from every angle. A sizable awning guides you to the front door with ease.
Upon stepping inside, prepare to be captivated. To the left, you’ll find a reception hall, while a restaurant and bar occupy the center space. On the right, the pro shop and restrooms await, completing the clubhouse layout.
Pre-Round:
Make your way to the back right of the clubhouse to access the pro shop and check in for your round. While you’re there, take some time to browse the merchandise – you should definitely check out the replicas of the five Super Bowl championship trophies that are on display.
The majority of the merchandise, including shirts, hats, and golf balls, will bear the Dallas Cowboys branding, which adds a cool touch.
These items can be hard to come by elsewhere, so if you don’t plan on returning soon, it’s the perfect opportunity to grab some swag!
Once you’ve paid for your round, it is time to take full advantage of the amenities included. With the purchase of the green fee, you’ll receive two complimentary meals, free non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, and unlimited range balls.
If, like me, you have a morning tee time and find yourself feeling hungry, head over to the Ring of Honor Kitchen and Bar for some mouthwatering breakfast tacos. I opted for something easy to carry so I could get out to the range.
Depending on the time of your visit, you can either grab a bite to eat or head straight to the range.
The range is expansive, offering both mats and grass. While my visits have typically coincided with mats-only sessions, rest assured that the mats are well-maintained and offer valuable feedback on your swing.
However, the real highlight here is the availability of unlimited, high-quality range balls. Take as many swings as you need to warm up before fine-tuning your putting stroke on the practice green.
It’s crucial to get your speed dialed in here, as the greens on the course are known for their lightning-fast pace. Kudos to the greenskeepers for ensuring that the putting green mirrors the on-course conditions flawlessly.
Front 9:
Now comes the exciting part – kicking off your round!
The front nine comes in at a whopping 3520 yards from the tips offering three tee options, like the rest of the course and clubhouse the tee boxes are black blue and silver to match the Dallas Cowboys colorway. It’s a par 36 with a diverse mix of holes, including two par 5s and a blend of both challenging and more manageable ones.
Unlike any other golf course in Dallas that are mostly flat in terrain, Cowboys Golf club is the opposite. Severe elevation changes are a common theme throughout the front 9 and back 9.
Hole #1: No easy start here. A 533 yard par 5 to start for your round. Not only is it a long hole but it is a dogleg left with well placed fairway bunkers to make cutting the corner a big risk.
Hole #2: A 376 yard par 4. This is a beautiful hole from the tee box that truly shows the elevation of the course. This is a very straightforward hole, keep it in play off the tee and you’ll come out good here.
Hole #3: A 176 yard par 3. Tough one here! The green is horizontally long and skinny with water at the front and few green side bunkers bordering the backside. The pin location will make or break this hole! Hopefully it is on the right side of the green.
Hole #4: The signature hole at Cowboys Golf Club! A 366 yard par 4 that is fairly straightforward. Standing on the elevated tee box you can look out to the fairway and see the Dallas Cowboys star right in the middle. Not only is it a cool touch to this course, but it is also a great aiming point.
Hole #5: A long par 4 coming in at 479 yards. This is the hardest hole on the course coming in at a 1 handicap. Narrow tee shot that will leave you with a second long approach shot into a narrow green that you dont want to miss left or right. Good luck.
Hole #6: A 163 yard par 3. The green is difficult to see from the tee box, club up because you don’t want to be short here.
Hole #7: Another difficult hole here. 468 yard par 4 that requires length and accuracy with little room for error. A dogleg right, it will take a big drive to cut the corner but too long or to left and you’ll be in sand.
Hole #8: Thought you would get a breather? Think again. A 520 yard par 5 that doglegs to the left. There is water that traces the right side f the fairway and starts at the bend.If you can hit a draw with your driver then swing away,if not a long tee shot could put you in the water.
Hole #9: Now you can breathe. A 441 yard par 4, clear the water off the tee and you’ll have a chance to score here.
The Turn:
You made it through the front 9 and hopefully you came out ok through the tough stretch between holes #5-8.
Normally, when playing a golf course in Dallas, you drive back by the clubhouse on your way to Hole #10, the course at Cowboys is a ways away from the clubhouse. But no worries! They have a grill located on the front 9 and back 9, along with plenty of beverage carts running around. And a little reminder, all drinks and snacks come with your round!
Back 9:
The back nine comes in just a tad shorter than front 9 at 3495 yards from the tips. Offering three tee options, like the rest of the course and clubhouse the tee boxes are black blue and silver to match the Dallas Cowboys colorway. It’s a par 36 with a diverse mix of holes, including two par 5s and a blend of both challenging and more manageable ones.
Hole #10: A 360 yard par 4 and the easiest hole on the course. Slight dogleg to the left, but aside from that, it is a retry simple hole with no hazards or sand traps. Go for it!
Hole #11: A 439 yard par 4. Another fairly simple hole, with the main challenge coming off the tee box. Trees cut off the right side of the fairway forcing a left side favored drive, and of course there is a sand trap in the common landing spot.
Hole #12: Straightforward 441 yard par 4 here. Trees line the right side of the fairway. Keep the drive in play and you will be good. Beware of the two green side bunkers, one on each side.
Hole #13: A 594 yard par 5. A beast of a hole and in my experience, the hardest hole on the course. Not only is it long, but the airway is narrow al the way to the green with both a creek cutting off the front side and a green side bunker to throw on top.
It is a must hit fairway off the tee, then a forced layup that is also a must hit fairway for the second shot. Be happy if you escape with a par on this monster.
Hole #14: Unlike the front 9 where there was a string of hard holes, hole #14 is a nice and simple hole after going through #13. A 333 yard par 4, reachable with the right conditions.
Hole #15: A 160 yard par 3. Straightforward enough here. Green side bunkers on the left and right covering the front half of the green. Club up to play it safe
Hole #16: Back to the challenge on #16, coming in at 455 yards par 4. A dogleg right with water along the left side of the fairway starting at the bend to the green.
Hole #17: The longest par 3 at Cowboys coming in at 194 yards from the tips. The green is well protected by 3 bunkers on the left side from the front to the back. An already long hole may require a club up as well.
Hole #18: A 520 yard par 5. This is a nice hole to end on with a wide open tee shot and a green that is reachable in two. Watch out for strong winds coming off Grapevine Lake and a fairway littered with bunkers.
Post Round:
The 18th hole conveniently leads you back up to the clubhouse. Remember, your round includes two complimentary meals, so now is the ideal moment to return to the Ring of Honor Kitchen and Bar for your second meal.
I recommend stepping out onto the 5-Point Patio to enjoy your meal, perhaps accompanied by some refreshing drinks! The patio overlooks the range and has plenty of TV’s.
Cowboys Golf Club is undeniably a must-play course in Dallas. Take pleasure in the rolling hills, lightning-fast greens, challenging holes, and the array of Cowboys memorabilia and branded merchandise available.
It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!
