Just a stone’s throw from Austin, Texas, lies one of the best-kept secrets in small-town charm – well, not so secret to us Texans. Gruene, Texas (pronounced “Green”), is one of my favorite small towns. Whenever I’m in New Braunfels, I make sure to swing by Gruene because there’s always something exciting happening and so many things to do!

I’ve been coming to New Braunfels for over two decades, mostly for floating down the Guadalupe and Comal rivers. But no trip is complete without a visit to Gruene for some delicious food and great country music!

History of Gruene

Gruene is not an official town but rather a historical district in New Braunfels. German farmers settled along the Guadalupe River in the 1840s and soon established Gruene with the help of Henry Gruene. The town continued to prosper thanks to nearby cotton farmers until the 1920s when an infestation of Boll Weevils and the Great Depression led to it becoming a ghost town.

In 1975, Chip Kaufman successfully got Gruene on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the local shops and buildings have a Texas medallion from the Texas Historical Commission and are big parts of the local history.

Gruene is a small little town, so you won’t need a lot of time to check off everything on this list. But if you’ve got a day or even just a bit of time to spare, it’s definitely worth making the trip to experience all that Gruene has to offer. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!

Eating in Gruene

The Gristmill holds the crown as the town’s favorite dining spot! Nestled within a historic cotton gin and right beside the iconic water tower, The Gristmill offers more than just a meal – it’s an experience. a picturesque setting overlooking the Guadalupe River. As a Texan, I have a soft spot for their mouthwatering chicken fried steak, juicy burgers, and fresh seafood, all crafted with locally sourced ingredients.

Pro tip: if you’re visiting during the summer months, consider snagging a table indoors. While dining with a view of the Guadalupe River is undeniably fantastic, Texas summers can turn the outdoor seating area into a sizzling experience you might want to avoid.

Since 2004, Gruene River Grill has been a top restaurant  serving the New Braunfels area, drawing in locals and tourists. Their commitment to freshness and quality shines through their scratch-made recipes, crafted with ingredients sourced from local vendors.

While The Gristmill may lure in the tourists, Gruene River Grill is where the locals gather. With a relaxed vibe, every visit is a memorable one. Trust me, it’s one of my all-time favorite spots to dine.

Cantina del Rio is the go-to spot for Tex-Mex lovers, pleasing both locals and tourists with its classic dishes like tacos, enchiladas, and nachos. But let’s talk about their margaritas – they’re the real deal, especially on a scorching summer day. If you can’t snag a table, head over to adobe verde for your Mexican food fix!

In Gruene, the options for fun are endless, but nothing quite beats floating down the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers! This popular activity attracts over a million visitors annually, and it’s easy to see why—it’s an absolute blast. While the Guadalupe is the larger river running through Gruene, many opt for the shorter 2.5-mile stretch of the Comal River, especially in the downtown area. Tubing down the rivers is n absolute must-do activity!

Check out my posts on both rivers if you plan on floating either one!
